Page one of a Google search, by the Numbers

Being on the first page of google is kinda big deal. That’s a given. Achieving a position in the first page is like crossing a new benchmark for your business. Even with that knowledge the actual statistics that confirm this can still surprise you. Let the numbers speak for themselves.

It is not lonely at the top

According to a study done by online ad network Chitika, the top listing in Google’s search engine results gets almost 33% of all traffic coming to that page.

The second list receives 18% and the traffic dribbles out as you go down the page. The top results receive a combined 61% of the clicks and it goes

without saying that if you want to enhance your brand visibility, you ought to strive to capture these positions on key search results. Incidentally, whether

your are on the first page of the search results or the third, the top result in that page consistently receive more footfall than the results placed in the lower

positions.

Are we on the same page about the first page?

It might come as no surprise to you that the first page receives the maximum amount of footfall - to the scale of 92% of the traffic. The traffic then drops off significantly by a 95% when we go on to the second page. Page three receives a meager 1% of the traffic. This is pretty amazing, considering the number of pages google’s search results return on an average search.

So you know you can’t afford to miss your spot on the first page. It is where the market comes to buy and you want to be where the action is.

Go Organic, Go Green.

According to a research report based on 1.4 billion searches conducted by GroupM UK and Nielsen, published by econsultancy, organic listings from a search results receive the maximum click-through rate of the order of 90%. That seems to be the average result although the data varies depending on the industry, keyword, niche market etc. There is also a significant difference when you take in branded and non-branded search results into the equation. In branded search results, users clicked the top search result 80% of the time, while the number was around 48% for unbranded searches. Compared to Organic Listings Paid Ads receive a staggering low amount of clicks. The average seems to hover around 10% or lower.

These numbers quantify the kind of advantage websites that occupy higher rankings in Google’s result have over their competitors listen below them. Just how important it is for your website to be in there.
